Are AEO and GEO Different Things?

The technical difference between the two terms, why it mostly stopped mattering, and what deserves attention instead.

Short answer: in practice, no. In precise usage, slightly.

Both terms describe the work of getting your brand into AI generated answers. The distinction that exists is real but narrow, and it matters far less than the amount of argument it generates on LinkedIn.

Here is the honest version.

What each term technically means

Answer engine optimization (AEO) grew out of optimising for direct answers. Featured snippets, voice assistants, knowledge panels, anything where a system gives one response instead of a list of links. It predates the current generation of AI assistants.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is newer and specifically describes optimising for systems that generate an answer rather than select one. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews.

So the technical difference is selection versus generation. An answer engine picks an existing passage and shows it. A generative engine reads several sources and writes something new.

That distinction was meaningful two years ago. It has mostly collapsed, because the same systems now do both.

The other terms floating around

You will also see:

LLMO, large language model optimization. Same thing, framed around the model rather than the interface.

AI SEO, which usually means the same thing again, sometimes with the confusing addition of "using AI tools to do SEO."

AI visibility, which describes the outcome rather than the practice, and is often the clearest of the lot.

Search everywhere optimization, a broader framing that includes TikTok, Reddit, YouTube and Amazon alongside AI assistants.

Different agencies pushed different labels, each hoping theirs would stick. None has fully won.

Why the distinction stopped mattering

Look at what the work actually involves under either label.

Structure content so passages can be quoted. Answer questions directly and early. Publish specific facts rather than hedged generalities. Make sure machines can crawl and render your pages. Get mentioned accurately across the third-party sources that models draw on. Measure presence across prompts rather than rankings across keywords.

That list does not change based on which acronym you use. Anyone selling you a distinctly different methodology for AEO versus GEO is selling you a repackaged version of the same work.

Where a real difference shows up

There are two places the terminology genuinely tracks something.

Featured snippets and similar formats still exist. If your programme includes classic Google snippet optimisation, that is AEO in the original sense, and it is a narrower, more mechanical discipline than optimising for generated answers.

Citation versus mention. Answer engines cite a source, so your page either is or is not the selected one. Generative engines can name your brand without linking to you at all. That difference matters for measurement, because presence and citation are two separate metrics with two different fixes. Missing mentions usually points to a third-party source problem. Missing citations usually points to a content structure problem.

If someone uses AEO and GEO to mark that distinction, they are using the terms usefully. Most people are not.

What to call it internally

Pick one term and use it consistently. Which one matters far less than the consistency.

A practical suggestion: use AI visibility when talking to leadership, because it describes the outcome and needs no explanation. Use whichever acronym your team prefers internally. Do not spend a planning meeting on the vocabulary.

If you are writing content on the topic, it is worth mentioning the alternative terms once so people searching either phrase can find you. Beyond that, the debate is a distraction.

What actually deserves the attention

The interesting questions in this space are not definitional.

Which sources shape answers in your category, and can you get into them? Why does your visibility differ so much between platforms, and what does that gap tell you? How do you measure something that produces value without producing clicks? How do you correct a false claim about your product that a model keeps repeating?

Those are hard and useful. Whether the discipline is called AEO or GEO is neither.

The summary

Treat AEO and GEO as the same field with two names. The narrow technical difference exists, it occasionally matters for how you frame measurement, and it should not influence what you actually do on Monday.

Pick a term, get a baseline, and start working on the sources.
